We established BLR Eldercare to serve the at-risk (homeless) elders in Ethiopia. Through assisted living housing, nutritional meal programs, and primary medical care, we can make a difference in their lives. Our goal is to Build hope by being a catalyst of Love and Restore dignified living for the elderly in Ethiopia. Our mission is to help at-risk seniors enhance their quality of life and remain in their own homes for as long as possible or join our senior care center designed to have a home-like living. We provide personal care services, assist with daily living activities and homemaking services.
After spending several years in the caregiving service, BLR has touched many lives with a passion to serve, ignited by compassion and meaningful volunteer work to enrich the lives of our elders. We have witnessed first-hand the incredible benefit that caregiving and helping others can provide to those battling homelessness and poverty in their resting years.
Ethiopia and the Elderly Ethiopia has a growing population of older people. According to the index Mundi 2020 data, the age group 65 and older is 3.8% of the total 118 million population. As this population increases, so do the number of poor, homeless, and hungry elderly. Ethiopia has experienced overall economic growth. However, according to local studies and World Bank reporting, the marginalized elders and the poor have not benefited from the development.
Major Challenges The aging population suffers the most since most lack education and lead a traditional lifestyle that does not generate retirement benefits. A significant number of the aging population does not have access to pensions, leaving them vulnerable to homelessness and harsh poverty. Many HIV/AIDS-related deaths in Ethiopia have orphaned many young parents in the past decade. As a result, grandparents are now raising children without adequate income to support themselves, let alone their grandchildren.
Lack of Support There is no provision for social security programs or and other financial support systems are scarce for the elderly. Many are unable to work due to illness or age. The elderly is unable to care for themselves and they are forced to be out on the streets.
Our Objectives Our priority is to help as many homeless elders as possible by getting them off the street and provide livable home, food, and medical care. Our commitment is to maintain quality of life through dignified living.
We also have three long-term goals:
To establish the first elderly home care center that provides for the basic physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the homeless elderly in Ethiopia.
To provide extended community-based care to provide stability for the elderly and prevent displacement and homelessness.
To bring awareness to the Faith-Based Community, social groups, and governmental agencies about the need of this population and encourage their participation in restoring hope and dignity to Ethiopia’s elderly.
Our Approach BLR is a faith-based organization. We have a holistic approach to elderly care, and we seek to promote collaboration among different groups so that together we can provide meaningful help for a positive outcome.
The mountain is enormous, the way up is laborious but, with Love, no mountain is too big to concur! One elder at a time, we can make a difference and maintain a legacy.
Their challenges are our opportunities.
One Time Giving BLR is also grateful for one-time gifts of support.
